UNA Tanzania empowers youth and communities to lead in governance, economic justice, climate action, and SDG advancement through advocacy, local solutions, and partnerships.

1. Decision Making and Governance

We engage actively in addressing policy and structural barriers impeding youth and people with disabilities inclusion in governance and policy processes from local to national levels.

This means working closely with right holders, duty bearers and partners in influencing policy formulation, reforms and implementation plans, and leading innovations for sustainable solutions in areas of democracy, leadership and development aspect

2. Youth Economic Rights

UNA Tanzania has diverse experience in supporting communities to strengthen their access to finance for improved livelihoods and increase household income.

This is through empowering and equipping women, youth and people with disabilities with knowledge, skills in entrepreneurship and financial management, facilitating access to local council own source 10% loans, youth development fund and establishment of Rotating Credit And Savings Association among others.

3. Strengthening Local Climate

Action UNA Tanzania collaborates with local communities to nurture opportunities for young men and women to innovate and scale up solutions for fighting climate change and adapting to its effects.

4. Stakeholders’ Coordination for Sustainable Development

UNA Tanzania co-convenes the Tanzania Sustainable Development Platform (TSDP), which is a national platform dedicated to coordinating CSOs for monitoring and reporting the implementation of SDGs

UNA Tanzania is dedicated to fostering youth inclusion in decision-making processes across local, national, and international levels.

African UN Youth Delegate Program (AUNYD)

AUNYD amplifies African youth voices by creating pathways for their engagement in high-level decision-making. It operates across six countries, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, South Sudan, and Ethiopia, where it engages and trains over 240 UN Youth Fellows and supports 24 UN Youth Delegates annually.

Mazingira Yetu Kesho Yetu (Our Environment, Our Future)

This five-year initiative, running from 2022 to 2026, aims to raise climate awareness and mobilize Tanzania’s youth—who make up over 70% of the population—to take an active role in addressing climate challenges. Through youth-led initiatives like climate dialogues, hackathons, boot camps, and essay competitions, the program addresses climate knowledge gaps among young people.

Mpwapwa Resilience Project

This two-year initiative in Mpwapwa District, Dodoma, benefits over 3,000 residents by addressing climate challenges like rainfall variability, deforestation, and drought. The project employs a comprehensive 7-pillar model, which includes water harvesting, climate-smart agriculture, and sustainable livelihoods, to increase food security and resilience.

A Highlight of Our Programs

Commission of Human Rights and Good Governance

UNA Tanzania led a team of 10 NGOs to collate public opinion, participate in developing legislation and lobby parliament, for the establishment of a Commission Human Rights and Good Governance in Tanzania. The institution has now been in operation since 2001. UNA Tanzania is recognized for this endeavor and sends representation in the commissioner’s selection.

2001 Media Policy Development

UNA Tanzania led a team of NGOs, in collaboration with Article 91, to conduct consultations towards the development of the Tanzania Media Policy of 2001. The conviction behind the exercise was to work towards enhancing the functioning of a free, independent and responsible media in Tanzania.

MDGs Awareness Campaign

Leading role in campaigning for MDGs awareness, implementation and stakeholders’ engagement. The organization has worked in over 10 regions in the country and has partnered with the UNAs of Kenya, Uganda, South Africa and Sweden in the process.

MKUKUTA II Consultations in 2010

UNA Tanzania participated in the CSO consultations towards the development of the second National Strategy for Growth and Poverty Reduction (NSGPR) or MKUKUTA II. UNA Tanzania led consultations in the Lake Zone region and was part of the technical committee submitting the CSOs position to the review and drafting process during the 2010 National Policy Dialogue.

International Engagement

UNA Tanzania has not only been actively engaging in National processes but also at the International level. We are participating in various UN processes including General Assembly, Conference of Parties (COP), the ICPD Beyond 2014 and the Post 2015 agenda consultations.

YUNA Tanzania, National MUN, EARMUN and ARMUN

An important part of the UNA Tanzania history is the establishment of our youth wing in 1996, which went on to seek registration in 2005. Through the youth wing, more than 12 National Model United Nations (MUN) has been conducted. This includes Eastern Africa Regional MUN (EARMUN) and Africa-wide MUN (ARMUN).
