Empowering Communities, Upholding Human Rights

May 20, 2025 webmaster No comments yet

Human rights are merely theoretical concepts but practical instruments for societal change, its an essential framework for ensuring the initiatives of an organization are rather inclusive, accountable and centered on peoples needs. On May 9th 2025, representatives from 15 diverse organizations came together for a transformative training on the Human Rights-Based Approach (HRBA) to sustainable development. Spearheaded by UNA Tanzania and facilitated by OHCHR’s Ms. Hilda Oyella at sight savers International Dar es salaam, through interactive sessions, participants unpacked key HRBA principles—non-discrimination, participation, accountability—and explored their intersection with gender equality and the “Leave No One Behind” agenda. Exercises like the power walk and cause-analysis workshops brought theoretical concepts to life, challenging attendees to reimagine development through the eyes of those most often overlooked.

By the day’s end, the once-static principles had been infused with urgency and clarity. Participants voiced revelations, realizing that past shortcomings in projects impact often stemmed from the absence of rights-centered planning. From the corridors of youth organizations to national-level advocacy platforms, the resounding message was clear: development must not only be for the people but by the people. With renewed commitment, attendees left equipped not just with tools and frameworks, but with a shared vision a future where human dignity, participation, and empowerment form the bedrock of every initiative.

The HRBA training, brought together organizations from across Tanzania and beyond to strengthen their capacity in integrating human rights principles into sustainable development efforts. Through engaging sessions led by OHCHR and UNA Tanzania, participants gained practical tools for rights-based programming, explored real-life applications, and emphasized the need to prioritize inclusion, accountability, and empowerment in every development initiative.
